Julio Larraz, a key figure in Latin American contemporary art, returns to the Magic City with a proposal that transcends generations. Reciprocity, opening at Ascaso Gallery, is more than an exhibition—it is a living homage to dialogue, continuity, and creative freedom.
In this gallery located in Downtown Miami’s art district, the master’s works are displayed alongside those of eleven emerging artists who, inspired by his vision and generosity, bear witness to the profound mark Larraz has left on their lives—including members of his own family.
“The idea of Reciprocity was born from a deep desire to build a bridge between generations,” said Julio Larraz. “Throughout my life, I’ve received so much from those who came before me, and it felt right and necessary to create a space where young artists—those I share affection and dialogue with—could exhibit their work alongside mine. Seeing them here is an act of celebration and continuity.”
Participating artists include Maia Larraz, Leticia Sánchez Toledo, Reyner Llanes, Cooper Dragonette, Julio Figueroa Beltrán, Haidy Love Larraz, Reynier Ferrer, Edel Lugones, Yojacne Téllez, Nelson Jalil, and Jefreid Lotti—all connected in some way to Larraz’s creative universe.
An Act of Giving and Receiving
The exhibition’s title refers to the vital dynamic that has shaped Larraz’s personal and artistic life. “I’ve received inspiration, teaching, and example from many masters. Over time, I understood that my duty was to give something back—generosity, advice, companionship. Everything I’ve given has always returned multiplied.”
Art as a Family Language
The exhibition takes on a personal tone by including his daughter Maia and daughter-in-law Haidy. “Sharing this space with my family means seeing how art has become a common language between us.”
Freedom as a Vital Axis
Larraz defends artistic freedom as an essential principle. “In this exhibition, each artist has full freedom to show their world without constraints. For me, freedom is the very essence of art—only from freedom can something true be created.”
“Creative freedom is non-negotiable; without it, art becomes propaganda or empty merchandise. Defending it means defending the dignity of the artist.”
A Defining Moment
With over six decades of career behind him, Larraz views the current moment of Latin American art in Miami with enthusiasm. “The city has become a vibrant platform for our artists. I believe we’re living a time of great visibility and expansion.”
“I’ve never sought tributes. What I’ve done, I’ve done out of conviction, not for recognition. But seeing others interpret that gesture as generosity and celebrate it fills me with gratitude.”
“What I hope people take away is simple and profound: that art is not a monologue, but a conversation between generations, times, and sensibilities. And above all, that they leave with a sense of shared freedom.”
